Today I am reviewing The Father by John Nicholl, published by Boldwood Books.

What you don’t know can hurt you.

Thirty years ago Anthony Mailer was a seven-year-old boy trapped in Dr Galbraith’s basement. Now he’s a journalist, a husband and a father. But no matter how far he’s come, at times he’s still that scared little boy.

In order to save his marriage, he has to stop hiding from what happened and deal with it once and for all.

But digging into the past holds dangers Anthony never imagined . . .

A note from the author: While fictional, this book was inspired by true events. It draws on the author’s experiences as a police officer and child protection social worker. The story contains content that some readers may find upsetting. It is dedicated to survivors everywhere.

“How far would you go to protect your daughter…”

The Father is the third and final book in the Doctor Galbraith series. I am not going to lie, I am relieved that there are no more books to come. This is not a negative reflection on the series in any way at all, as the books are very good, but the subject matter is too much for me if it were to continue.

In this final instalment we are with Anthony, 30 years after the horrific abduction and torture he received at the hands of Galbraith, at just seven years old. As expected, this experience still haunts him which affects his relationship with his wife and daughter, but decides to write a book detailing his experience in the hope those relationships can be mended and himself healed.

This is another emotional read that broke my in heart in two.

Thank you to John Nicholl, Boldwood Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of The Father, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

This review will be added to, Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Amazon Australia & Amazon US. I will also add to NetGalley, Apple Books, Kobo, Google read Play Barnes & Noble, Waterstones, Foyles and BookBub if available. As I am from Australia, I am unable to add to Amazon UK.
