Today I am taking part in the blog tour and sharing an extract from Underrated by Morweena Blackwood.
“I stand as close as I can to the Liver Building without looking proper weird and tip my head back. My eyes can’t focus properly, but I can make out a turquoise shape right at the top, so I mouth ’iya to Bella. I’m a bit soft on the Liver Birds. They’re 300-odd feet up in the air, so they should be able to see everything, but they’re chained down…”
A story of the far-reaching effects of unrequited love and drug (ab)use, Underrated follows five lads who are just trying to make things better for themselves. In Liverpool and on the south Devon coast, their lives entangle as they turn to cocaine.
While some people take drugs to escape their circumstances, others deal drugs to escape theirs. But is escape ever really an option?
Will is in love with Kayleigh, and although they’ve got together a few times, she doesn’t feel the same. They are on a pretty much inaccessible beach, where Will is picking up a load of cocaine…
I must have dozed off for a bit, because then Kayleigh was shaking my arm, leaning half over me where I lay, spent and sandy, saying, “Will, I think the tide’s turning – we’d better get out of here!”
She was right, and I scrambled up, ran through the waterfall, and into the sort of cave behind it, climbed up the left-hand side bit, and forced my cold, wet hand into the leather glovethat had somehow managed to stay in my back pocket, and reached deep into a hole.
The hole was so high up that I couldn’t see what I was doing. I wore the glove so that I didn’t get all cut up. It protected my hand, but made feeling around for the package quite difficult. In the end, I made my hand into one of those grabbers that you use at the seaside arcades to try to win your girlfriend a toy, and randomly made grabbing movements, hoping that I’d get hold of something.
I had as much success as I do with those arcade games, but just as my arm was aching so badly that it was all I could do to keep it above my head, I got hold of the package. It was hard to haul out – it was big – but when I did, I turned triumphantly to Kayleigh. But she wasn’t there. She was standing in the shallows, staring out to sea.
