Today I am taking part in the books on tour and reviewing on its publication day Mystery at Magpie Lodge by Clare Chase, published by Bookouture.

Book Description

After a notorious ghosthunter is found dead, the village of Saxford St Peter is quick to decide that something spooky is at work. But Eve Mallow is on the hunt for an all-too-human suspect…

When down-on-his-luck Emory Fulton moves into crumbling Magpie Lodge, and starts running ghost tours, the locals are none too pleased. He’s inventing grisly tales about their lovely little village, and disturbing everyone’s peace.

But then he’s found dead in his bath, and everyone is suddenly running scared. Could something otherworldly be at work? After all, the murder mirrors one of Fulton’s spooky stories…

But Eve Mallow is sure the killer has a much more human motive.

Accompanied by her stalwart dachshund sidekick Gus, she starts to dig a little deeper. Could the culprit be Fulton’s snobbish bigwig brother, or the suspicious local skeptic? Why was his goddaughter handing him mysterious parcels, and why wouldn’t his sister-in-law let him in her house?

As Eve unravels the secrets of the living and the dead, one thing is for sure: Fulton was a haunted, hunted man. And if Eve doesn’t crack the case soon, she might have a close encounter of the deadly kind too…

An unputdownable page-turner, perfect for fans of Faith Martin, Agatha Christie and Betty Rowlands.

The murder of local ghost hunter Emory Fulton, has the residents of Saxford St Peter fearing that something supernatural could have played a part in his death, when it is discovered that he was murdered exactly like one of the stories he told on his ghost tours.

I really loved this story and was happy to be reunited with Eve and of course dachshund Gus, as we worked together to solve this latest murder case. None too popular with the townsfolk, there are plenty of suspects who could be responsible for Emory’s death and I enjoyed being kept it in the dark until it was time for all to be revealed.

The Eve Mallow series is just a gift that keeps on giving. Seven books in and it is still a series that I get so excited about whenever I see a new book coming. Mystery at Magpie Lodge is another fantastic addition to it and I look forward to I hope many more books to come.

Let’s Get to Know Clare Chase

Clare Chase writes classic mysteries. Her aim is to take readers away from it all via some armchair sleuthing in atmospheric locations.

Her debut novel was shortlisted for Novelicious’s Undiscovered Award, as well as an EPIC award post-publication, and was chosen as a Debut of the Month by LoveReading. Murder on the Marshes (Tara Thorpe 1) was shortlisted for an International Thriller Writers award.
