Today I am reviewing on it’s publication day Cry to Me by J.A. Schneider.

Book Description

Liddy Bell shot her husband – or did she? In the middle of a party she’s giving with her guests just feet away? Liddy’s sister Kim, a true crime writer, struggles to prove her sister innocent – and avoid falling for a man who might be dangerous.

Wyatt Bell was a powerful tech CEO; the party was to celebrate the purchase and restoration of his and Liddy’s 1920s mansion. No one heard the shots that killed him and wounded Liddy. The band was loud and guests were scattered.

When the police declare the crime a failed murder-suicide attempt and Liddy as their suspect, her sister Kim is devastated and insists it’s a setup. Wyatt’s handsome brother David and Liddy’s closest friends try to help Kim investigate…but questions arise. Could Liddy have only pretended to be happy, snapped, and shot her husband? Above all, Kim’s worst anguish is wondering if she ever really knew her sister…

With a hurricane approaching, the police put their investigation on hold, and those closest find themselves all under one roof. Relationships unravel, and Kim thinks, “This is terrifying. We’re all five of us in this house. At night in a hurricane with no power…and a terrible feeling of menace. I can’t shake it.”

J.A. Schneider invites the reader to a party where the last thing you would expect is for it to end with your host Liddy Bell seriously wounded with a gun in her hand and her husband Wyatt dead! Did Liddy shoot her husband then try to kill herself? or is there more to it than meets the eye? These are the million dollar questions that will roll around in your head as you become entangled in this tale in search of the truth.

I really enjoyed how this one played out, which for me felt like I was in a real life game of Cluedo. J.A Schneider really sets the scene so well, with a raging hurricane, the guests unable to leave and the possibility that one of them could be a murderer. It had me hooked and along with Liddy’s sister, true crime writer, Kim, the idea that this was a failed murder suicide as deemed by the police, did not sit well with me.

The cast of characters assembled have been well fleshed out and each becomes a suspect in your mind. I was thrown off course a number of times as questions were raised that had my mind going from maybe Liddy did do this, to no, it has to be someone else. Although for me it all clicked into place before the reveal, this in no way ruined the enjoyment of the book for me.

Cry to Me is a story that hits the ground running right from the first page. You are thrown head first in the thick of it which I really liked. From there the pace never lets up and you fly through the pages, making for a quick and easy read. All up Cry to Me is a well written and thrilling mystery to curl up with.

Thank you to J.A. Schneider for my gifted copy of Cry to Me, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Let’s Get to Know J.A. Schneider

Joyce Anne Schneider is a former writer at Newsweek who grew up with an absolute passion for books and reading. She is the author of the 6-book EMBRYO medical thriller series, the 4-book police/psychological thrillers featuring NYPD Detective Kerri Blasco, and the standalone thrillers Into the Dark, Girl Watching You, What You’ve Done, and Cry to Me.

What led her to writing for Newsweek was previous – and sometimes wild – experience studying in Paris, then being an exchange student in the Soviet Union where she promptly got arrested for spreading anti-Soviet propaganda. She next wound up in a Soviet hospital after falling down a ravine during a hike near Sochi. She thinks the Soviets were glad to see her leave.

Now things are calmer, if you call writing suspense thrillers calmer. When not writing she’s usually thinking about writing and dreaming up new stories, and can rarely be seen without her trusty laptop. She lives with her family in Connecticut, loves gardening, and is working on her next thriller.
