You can always trust your closest friends. Can’t you?
This trip was a chance to reconnect away from our busy lives. The five of us used to be so close—going right back to our college days, when we shared a rickety house and all our favorite clothes, as well as every high and low of our lives—but that was then.
Now, the thought of three days in a small cabin far from anywhere, surrounded only by water and trees, with my four oldest friends makes my stomach sink and my hands sweat. Because if they knew what I’d done—the betrayals I’ve committed—they’d never forgive me. And neither would you.
The straight-A student, the sports star with a bright future ahead of her, the sheltered girl who blossomed away from her family and the hippie child who was going to save the world. Their lives have turned out so differently to how we pictured all those years ago. I try not to think about why.
But then danger strikes, and too late I discover I’m not the only one keeping secrets. And I wonder: who will go furthest to keep the truth hidden?
Gripping, addictive and totally unputdownable, The Lake House will have you reading late into the night. Perfect for fans of The Girl on the Train, The Woman in the Window and Big Little Lies.
Nothing scares me more than the words “off the grid” and “no mobile phone reception”! Reading Laura Wolfe’s The Lake House, could not have reinforced this more in me and is the perfect example of why I feel this way. Give me a holiday in an overpopulated destination, with phone reception any day!
Right off the bat, Laura Wolfe injects a sinister vibe into the story that is carried throughout from start to finish. The prologue had me hooked and I couldn’t wait to get stuck in and discover all the secrets that it promised. Did it deliver? My word it did! What a wild and terrifying ride the reader is taken on!
Laura Wolfe has done a fantastic job with the characters and each bring the story to life. I also have to say I was quite thrilled that the one of the Ladies child was named Marnie. Although not after me, it still gave me a thrill seeing it in print! The setting for this story is perfect and just adds to its sinister tone. A house not as picturesque as it looked online, an abandoned school camp not far away where a murder took place only a couple of months before and the creepy owner of the lake house are all extra elements that adds to the chilling appeal of this book.
I enjoyed how the story played out, which is told from the point of view of one of the ladies, with flashback scenes interspersed throughout from the women’s college days. Over the course of these flashbacks, we become privy to the events that lead to the why of how things turn out in the present, with the outcome far removed from how I thought is was going to go. And that last line of the story! WOW! What an ending!
I just love Laura Wolfe’s style of storytelling and The Lake House is no exception. I was so caught up in the story that one minute the sun was up and the next it was down!. Not able to tear myself away, this is my definition of a brilliant read, which Laura Wolfe has delivered in spades!
The Lake House is a thrilling and twisty read. I absolutely loved this book and I am sure that you will too. It was such a pleasure to read and review The Lake House, which will come as no surprise, that I highly recommend.
