In this game, even winning can be deadly…
Amy Whey is proud of her ordinary life and the simple pleasures that come with it–teaching diving lessons, baking cookies for new neighbors, helping her best friend, Charlotte, run their local book club. Her greatest joy is her family: her devoted professor husband, her spirited fifteen-year-old stepdaughter, her adorable infant son. And, of course, the steadfast and supportive Charlotte. But Amy\’s sweet, uncomplicated life begins to unravel when the mysterious and alluring Angelica Roux arrives on her doorstep one book club night.
Sultry and magnetic, Roux beguiles the group with her feral charm. She keeps the wine flowing and lures them into a game of spilling secrets. Everyone thinks it\’s naughty, harmless fun. Only Amy knows better. Something wicked has come her way–a she-devil in a pricey red sports car who seems to know the terrible truth about who she is and what she once did.
When they\’re alone, Roux tells her that if she doesn\’t give her what she asks for, what she deserves, she\’s going to make Amy pay for her sins. One way or another.
To protect herself and her family and save the life she\’s built, Amy must beat the devil at her own clever game, matching wits with Roux in an escalating war of hidden pasts and unearthed secrets. Amy knows the consequences if she can\’t beat Roux. What terrifies her is everything she could lose if she wins.
A diabolically entertaining tale of betrayal, deception, temptation, and love filled with dark twists leavened by Joshilyn Jackson\’s trademark humor, Never Have I Ever explores what happens when the transgressions of our past come back with a vengeance.
This is a really great read that will keep you enthralled right from the get go through to the thrilling conclusion. If you love a story that is full of mystery, suspense, one kickass of a showdown and where you are taken on a wild ride, then this is the book for you!
The plot of the story is quite twisted. Joshilyn has created a world where everyone has something to hide and how each person will do whatever it takes to keep their secrets hidden. An innocent book club meeting hosted by Amy for her friends that all live the same street, turns sinister when new resident Roux turns up and moves the direction of the meeting to a dangerous game of Never Have I Ever.
Mostly nothing ever good comes when playing this game and it should never be played when copious amounts of alcohol have been consumed! In this case, inhibitions are shed and secrets are revealed, and for these women, it changes the course of the perfect lives that they have portrayed to have. But for Amy, she has the biggest secret to hide and Roux has set her sights on her to make sure that Amy pays for the tragic event that occurred in her past and she won’t stop until she gets what she wants, no matter the consequences and who she hurts along the way.
There are a few characters in this book but the main players of Amy and Roux are definitely the standouts. Both have been written extremely well with Amy as the more likeable character that I felt sympathy for, where Roux is just a despicable calculating human being who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Both play their parts in the story well and have been created as very believable. Let’s just say I would never want to come across Roux alone in a dark alley!!
I really enjoyed Joshilyn’s writing style. Whilst at times I would have liked the pace to be a bit quicker, for the most part it did move at the right speed and built just the right amount of tension along the way. There was a part towards the end of the book where it took a bit of an unexpected turn and the subject matter was a bit confronting and a surprise, but it did not ruin the overall story for me and the final outcome was satisfying. All up this is a thoroughly enjoyable read which I definitely recommend.
Thank-you to NetGalley, Raven Books and Joshilyn Jackson for granting me the wish and allowing me to read an advanced copy of Never Have I Ever which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
